Flybarre- Raise the Barre and Never Coast!

First, I want to say a big thank you for your support after yesterday’s post on HopeWalks, the walk to raise money for Vernon Cancer Center at Newton-Wellesley Hospital!  With your help I have reached my individual goal of $100.  I’m still raising money for the walk to help my team reach their overall goal of $5,000, so if you would like to donate (or look at the names of those who have donated to the cause!), you can visit my donation page here: http://giving.nwh.org/myownbalance.  I truly appreciate your support and help! 🙂

Now, to my workout review of the day!  So, with the barre workout craze in full swing, I decided it was time for me to try out FlyBarre at Flywheel Sports!  After becoming totally addicted to their spin classes I couldn’t wait to find out if their barre class, FlyBarre, was equally as challenging.

I went with another Flywheel devotee and we were pleasantly surprised by how easily we fit in (I really hate feeling out of place in a new class, don’t you?).  What was really great about FlyBarre is that you can sign up for your mat space prior to class so you don’t have to fight with the other participants to get a space at the barre!  Your equipment (two exercise bands and an exercise ball) is all set up for you when you get there but you need to grab your weights outside the studio prior to going in for class.  Unsure how much weight I would need, I grabbed 5lbs, 3lbs and 2lbs.

Our instructor, Todd, introduced himself to us and checked for injuries and then we were off.  The warmup reminded me a lot of the warmups I used to always do for my jazz dance classes-stretching and lengthening.  We then moved onto some ab exercises lying on our back with our feet anchored underneath the barre.  Oh HELLO ABS!  I knew at this point that I was in for a *real* workout!!!  Thinking it couldn’t possibly get more difficult, Todd then asked us to grab a weight.  Oh man.

The class consisted of a mix between using weights for toning your arms (owwwww-3lbs were enough!) with a mix of some dance moves and plie squats to work the legs, thigh work at the barre (have you ever tried to balance on your toes while doing squats? No?  Try it and let me know how you feel.), ab work using the exercise ball, butt work on our hands and knees holding the ball behind our knee and some work on our stomach to tone the back.  The class ended with a nice stretch at which point I felt totally dead and was happy to just lie on my mat!  Everything was SO HARD!  But before I intimidate you, let me tell you that the moves were easy to follow, they were just challenging to do and then repeat and then repeat some more!  The beauty of FlyBarre, like other barre classes, is that you don’t have to use a lot of weight to really get toning results-light weights or your own body weight and high reps are enough.

So, you ask, what’d you think of FlyBarre?  I’m hooked!  I mean if I spent my weeks alternating between Flywheel and FlyBarre, I’d be ripped (like in the photo above-Fit Inspiration!).  FlyBarre was fun, challenging and totally gets results.  The class moved at a great pace which allowed me to get my heart rate up (I burned about 300 calories in a one hour class) while also focusing on targeting my “trouble” areas.  So all my lovely MOB followers, try out FlyBarre if you get a chance!  They have locations throughout the U.S., visit www.flywheelsports.com to find a class near you!
