Friday’s Food & Fitness: Food Mishmash + cheerFIT

It’s Friday again!  Woo hoo!  Can I still celebrate even if it was a short week?  I think so!  To make matters worse (better?) I spent half a day yesterday volunteering with kids, which consisted of visiting the Museum of Natural History with them.  Yeah, I’m really putting in the hard yards at work over here.  Anyways, welcome to Friday’s Food & Fitness: The Mishmash Edition.  I’m calling this one a mishmash because I have so much to catch you guys up on!  So let’s get started!

Farmer’s market finds from the week:

farmers market 7 So excited about this. Shoshito peppers- my fav!  Plus I’m trying out these new little eggplant things called Fairytale Eggplant.  I’ll let you know how that goes!

So the food in Brazil was good and bad.  The good thing was that they love meat and do a really great job at cooking it.  The bad thing is that I’m not a huge meat person.  I eat meat but I really like more of a Mediterranean based diet and I’m big on flavors rather than just a plain old slab of meat with sides.  It just ain’t my thing.  But we did have a lovely meal at Ciprianis (yes, I know there is one in NYC).

Plus, this delicious couscous dish that was not all Brazilian.  The lemonada drink, which is kind of like a fresh juice–this one was raspberry and watermelon, is definitely Brazilian!

If you go to Brazil, if you know someone Brazilian, if you in any way can get your hands on the Brazilian cheesy bread called Pao de Queijo, DO IT.  Don’t think about it, don’t ask why.  Just go get yourself some and then you can thank me later.  A waiter actually took half of mine at one restaurant and I legit almost started to cry.  It was that good!

A few notable meals from last week that I didn’t share with you because I told you all about Fit Mama Friday instead of FFF!

Last week I had the opportunity to attend a bootcamp with cheerFIT.  You guys, this workout is SO MUCH fun!  Confession, I wanted to be a cheerleader in high school but you see, I played field hockey in the fall and that left only winter basketball cheerleading.  I actually went out for the team one year and made it but it conflicted with my dance schedule.  Soooo, it never happened.  But the high schooler in me got excited when I was invited to attend cheerFit.

cheerfit6The creator of cheerFIT, Danielle, is legit!  She was a former cheerleader at Syracuse University who tore her ACL cheering.  She rehabbed herself through physical therapy and strengthening her muscles.  Through this her idea for cheerFIT was born to help cheerleaders and fitness enthusiasts alike build strength, improve balance and coordination and achieve greater flexibility to help them become better and stronger versions of themselves.  Danielle has worked with professional cheerleading teams to get them in shape and now offers her expertise to the general public in her bootcamp classes.

cheerFIT bootcamp is broken down into segments: Cardio, stability, strength, core and flexibility.  Each segment has a cheer-inspired move.  Although, non-cheerleading types don’t be intimidated, the moves are completely accessible and special cheer skills are not required.

cheerFIT2Just because this is a cheerleading inspired workout, don’t expect it to be all smiles and easy-peasy (well, you can and should smile but you’ll be sweating and smiling!).  The bootcamp is TOUGH!  Danielle really kicks your booty!  I absolutely loved everything about it, especially her energy.  It was a ton of fun!

cheerfit4Bootcamps are located in Central Park (yay outside!) for the rest of the summer on Wednesdays.  For more info, visit here.  OH and your first class is FREE!!!  Check it out

Readers, were you a cheerleader in high school?  What’s something you always wanted to try but never have?  Are you a meat and veg fan or do you like more of a mix?
