Friday’s Food & Fitness: The Greek Edition
Hello my lovely friends! Hope you’ve had an excellent week! Mine has been short thankfully. The Hubs and I got back from our babymoon Tuesday night. I’ll have full recaps for you later but for now I have to tell you about the food! Oh my gosh! It was so delicious! So welcome to Friday’s Food and Fitness: The Greek Edition!
I have professed my love for the Mediterranean diet before so you can imagine how excited I was to get to experience it first hand. I can’t possibly recap every single amazing meal we had, but I’ll definitely give you the highlights!
We started our eatcation on Crete and let me tell you, if you go to Crete you must eat at Kalypso! This was definitely the best restaurant we ate at while on Crete and the hospitality was incredible!
Traditional Cretan “nerati”- a skillet fried myzithra cheese pie with fig chutney
Tahini soup.
Mushroom risotto with white truffle oil.
And the star of the show was the moussaka! The Hubs absolutely loved it. It was his favorite thing he ate in Greece and that is saying a lot! In case you’ve never had it, it’s made of eggplant, potatoes, lamb mince bolognese sauce and bechamel. Delish!
Although we had some great meals at our hotel, one of the highlights of our trip was venturing out to nearby towns to eat at the local restaurants. There are some gorgeous spots with tables perched overlooking the aqua water that just made you never want to leave.
Most of the menus at these places were fairly similar and I was a big fan of the traditional Greek mezze. We would order a bunch of appetizers and then maybe split one main (usually fish). A few of my favorites include:
Zucchini chips. I declare these the new kale chips. You heard it here first!
Tzatziki. I’ve always liked tzatziki from the store, but now that I’ve had the real thing I’m never turning back! It’s so amazing! Plus, I’ve got the recipe for you guys straight from the mouth of the Greeks: Greek yogurt (full fat), grated cucumber that has the water pressed out of it, garlic, lemon zest and a bit of evaporated milk.
Eggplant salad. It has eggplant in it so it must be healthy, right!?
Stuffed zucchini flowers. These were a special kind of awesome that I can’t even describe. They had the faintest hint of cumin to them and were just overall delicious. The Hubs has repeatedly asked me if I can make this. The answer is no, no I can’t.
Fish is a huge staple in the Greek diet and the fresh fish was so incredible! This dish was just fish with tomatoes and olives. So simple yet so amazing!
And of course the Greek salad. With those lovely hunks of feta, fresh ripe tomatoes, green peppers, sweet red onion and tasty olives…this was pretty much a daily staple for me. Would you believe I haven’t retouched this photo at all? The veggies are really that fresh!
I have such an exciting amazing Levo League Event planned for next Monday! If you live in the NYC area, you have to come!!
It’s going to be amazing!!!! Class with Body Conceptions by Mahri, treats and so much fun!
Readers, what’s the best new dish you’ve tried on vacation? What are you up to this weekend? Have you ever done yoga at an airport? (I brought my yoga may in my carry-on and whipped it out during my layover in London!)
