Get Your Vitamin D with Lots of Sunshine!

Hello all!  Happy Wednesday!  I had a minor kerfuffle with my computer yesterday and Monday when it stopped charging. Yikes!  So yesterday at lunch I stopped at the Apple store and $79 later I was hooked up with a new charger.  At least they had my charger in stock!  Does anyone else notice how Apple kind of forces you to buy their latest technology by making older technology obsolete?  I couldn’t even buy a cover the Hub’s iPad case I got him two years ago.  Two years is not a long time for an expensive item!!!  O.k. rant over.  Sorry about that.

On to happier topics today. . . SUNSHINE!  With the days getting progressively shorter and my vitamin D levels beginning to plummet, we could all use a little bit more sunshine in our lives.  Recently Cailee nominated me for the Sunshine Award.  If you don’t know Cailee, she is an extremely positive person that pretty much defines the Sunshine Award.  So you can imagine how honored I was when she nominated me!

So here are my answers to Cailee’s questions:

sunshine-award1. What got you interested in blogging?
I started reading some blogs while putting together a list of 30 Things I wanted to do before I turned 30.  From there I stumbled across more and more healthy living bloggers, all of whom I loved!  I decided I wanted to write about my passion and viola, My Own Balance was born!

2. What are the goals of your blog?
Well, I really want to use my blog as a platform for other projects like a fitness video or an e-book or something.  But on the day to day side of things, I really just want to create something that I love and hopefully others will love as well.  I want to motivate people to love exercise and healthy living.  I want to connect with people who already do love it!

3. How often do you exercise?
Most days of the week!  I sit at a desk nine hours a day plus additional sitting down for blogging time so I try to be active everyday.  I workout most days and on “rest days” I try to do things like stretching/gentle yoga, walking or something that helps get me moving.  Of course there are days when I just do nothing too!

Working out
4. What is your favorite type of exercise?
Ohhh this is tough because I love so many different forms of exercise: cycling (indoor and out), water sports, tennis, kickboxing.  I guess I have to stay true to my dancing roots though and go with my top two favorites: barre & cardio dance/Zumba.

5. Now that the holiday season is upon us,
do you have any tips to stay healthy and prevent weight gain?
Stay active.  Diet is really important but during the holidays we tend to indulge more and that’s ok for a short period of time but you’ve got to stay active to keep the pounds off.  Sign up for a turkey trot, do yoga, try a new class, squeeze in a walk at lunch.  Just keep moving!  Also, try to avoid treats at work and save the holiday indulging for parties/dinners with friends and family.  You’ll enjoy it more and you’ll feel good for not giving into every single temptation.
6. What is your favorite splurge food?
Hmm… I have to pick just one?  I guess it would be cheese or chocolate.  Definitely not chocolate cheese though.

Cheese
7.What’s your eating philosophy?
My eating philosophy is “eat healthy most of the time, make good choices and it’s ok to splurge on occasion.”  Also, save up your splurges for when it really counts and you’ll enjoy them more!

8. In a typical day, what are some of the foods you would eat?
Hmm well my foods change a lot from week to week because I love trying out new recipes but a few things you might see over and over include: Greek yogurt, oatmeal, nuts (probably almonds), almond butter, salads, kale (love kale chips!), fruit.  For dinner I love whole-wheat pastas, vegetables, Mexican/Italian/Asian-inspired recipes . . . I could go on.

9. What is in your grocery cart?
Funny you should ask…I’ve got a screen shot right here of this week’s groceries! 😉

Farmer's Market Loot
Can’t go wrong at the farmer’s market!

10. Best tips to maintain a healthy lifestyle?
Find your motivation.  If making healthy choices is a constant drag to you, you are not going to stick with it.  You have to find what motivates you to keep going.  I love to exercise so that keeps me active and prompts me to make healthier meal decisions.  Maybe you want to learn how to cook with healthier ingredients or you want to complete a race or you need to lower your cholesterol.  You have to find something that helps you make the right decisions.
