Dance for a Cause

Hello friends! How are you? I’m excited to say that I’ve got one day down and only two more left in this short week! Yay for holidays! Did you see yesterday’s post on how to make this your Healthiest Thanksgiving EVER! If you haven’t checked it out yet, head on over now and find out how you can stay healthy on this holiday surrounding food consumption!

But enough about that, let’s focus on the real reason we love Thanksgiving . . . giving thanks. If you remember way back in my Thankful November post, I said that I wanted to find a charity that I could get involved in, preferably one that allowed me to combine my interests of being active and helping people out. Well, last week I got to participate in DMF’s Dance for a Cause event and it was amazing!

DMF-2

You may remember DMF (Dance Motivation Fitness) from when I talked about it here and here. I love the dance workouts there and the instructor, Lindi, is an amazing, positive person. So it should come as no surprise that she is using DMF as a way to better the world one workout at a time. Dance for a Cause was an event hosted by Lindi to benefit Young Women’s Leadership Network.

Young Women’s Leadership Network helps young women achieve their educational dreams by providing them with empowering leadership skills.  They accomplish this through two ways. First, YWL Schools are a private school initiative for 6-12th grade females from predominately low-income families.  The school focuses on helping these girls be the first in their families to attend college. The second way is through the YWLN College Bound Initiative.  This program helps women and men realize their potential and achieve higher education and life goals by placing them with a counselor who can help them maximize access to colleges and financial aid.  Since 2001, the organization has helped 5,500 students attend college.

As a leadership major in college and a female in a male-dominated profession, I can’t tell you how much the work of this organization means to me.  We need more women attending college and pursuing professional careers.  It is especially important to help create awareness and accessibility for families that may not see college as a realistic option.

We raised over $1,000, which is a true testament to how many amazing fitness fanatics really do care in this big city!

The class was so much fun! I went with my friend Anna and we had an absolute blast. You know I love dance workouts but this one was really special because I was helping others while doing something I love. How many people can say that? I am very lucky to have been a part of this great cause and I want to thank DMF and Lindi for hosting such a caring and thoughtful event.

Readers, how do you support causes you believe in? Have you ever done a dance/run/walk or other fitness event for charity? What are you thankful for this week?
