Fighting Shape

Hey there!  How’s your week going so far?  How are you doing with your goals this week?  So far I’m doing pretty well!  I’ve been keepin’ on keepin’ on with my fitness goals for sure.  Just check out my workout log! 🙂  It’s a good thing because this past weekend was full of indulgences!  Have you ever heard of Smorgasburg?  It’s the most amazing open-air food market.  It’s literally row upon row of culinary delights.

Smorgasburg 1

Basically there all these amazing food stalls that offer up incredible gourmet eats like these pork buns, little piggies and gourmet grilled cheese made with various cheeses, apples and other goodness!

It gets so crowded because the food is so darn good!  But the views are pretty awesome!

We were so stuffed, but of course there is always room for dessert! 😉

So as you can see, I’ve taken the indulgences to the extreme lately!  It’s a good thing I’ve been hitting it hard recently on the workout front.  In fact, recently I got to try out UFC, a new gym in the Financial District of Manhattan (you were wondering when the title “Fighting Shape was going to make sense right?”).

UFC 1

Even more exciting than trying a new class was the fact I got to do it with my bloggie friend Anna from Tough Lipstick.  She is super cool and together we totally kicked butt… or tried to!

UFC 5

We signed up for a kickboxing class and let me just preface this by saying I love kickboxing.  I’ve professed my love for TurboJam here before but let’s be real, I’m a girlie kickboxer.  Well, this class was NO JOKE!  This was not just some air punching and jumping around.  This was the real deal.

UFC 6

Each participant was given their own set of boxing gloves and had their hands wrapped before class (see what I mean–real deal).  We also each had our own punching bag.  After a warm up that involved some callesthenics, we spent the better part of the hour jabbing, crossing and kicking at that big burly bag.  You wouldn’t think that throwing some punches would be so difficult but it was incredibly hard and very tiring!  And of course we had to intersperse some cardio drills in between punching rounds to make things really tough (like I said, real deal)!

We finished off with some abs and then stretching before calling it quits for the day.  I was drenched and sweat and totally spent but Anna and I had the best time!  UFC offers a ton of other boxing classes in addition to personal training.  Even though it’s set up as a boxing gym, they have some traditional cardio and weight torture tools equipment.  I would definitely recommend UFC if you are interested in getting serious about boxing training.  This place is membership only so you’ve got to be committed to focusing on this type of training but the facilities are top notch and the workout is amazing!

Readers, have you ever tried boxing?  Have you ever been to Smorgsburg or another food market?
