Food & Fitness: Summer of Fitness Round 2

Hi friends!  We made it to another Friday!  Any exciting plans for the weekend?  I’ve got some fun things on the menu.  More about that below.  Welcome to this week’s edition of Food & Fitness!

I’m finally getting into the swing of cooking things again!  During my first trimester I felt too sick and was too tired at night to make good food.  I would get so stressed for Friday’s Food & Fitness because I normally had nothing to show for the week!  I hoped I managed to fool you guys! 🙂

Cinco de mayo 1

I started the week with a little Cinco de Mayo feast.  Chicken burritos, homemade guac and plantain chips.  It was my first time making plantain chips and I absolutely loved them!  They were so much easier to make than I thought.  I’ll definitely be making these again.

 soup

I made this tomato soup with gruyere toasts after seeing them in cooking light.  Don’t you think my soup looks like the photo!?  Ok, maybe the light at 9:30 pm isn’t ideal for food photography…or the hangriness of waiting that long to eat!  But the soup was delicious!

Last year I proclaimed 2013 to be the Summer of Fitness but I think 2014 is going to give 2013 a run for its money.  There are so many crazy good events coming up this year and I’m so excited for them!  To name a few:

A Healthy U Conference– Hosted by a few of my favorite bloggers: Kimberly from Manifest Yourself, Nellie from Brooklyn Active Mama and Cassandre from Losing in the City.  The event is tomorrow and it is SOLD OUT!  It’s going to be amazing with some great speakers, healthy snacks, fitness and tons of awesome people!

Levo League netWORKOUT–  My first netWORKOUT as workout Chairman for Levo League is planned for next Wednesday!  We are partnering with Equinox for a Tabata workout.  Local ladies, this is a *free* event and the perfect opportunity to meet other working professionals in NYC.  You can sign up here!  Hope to see you there! 🙂

Lole White Tour– So excited to be participating in this event this year.  I can’t remember if last year they didn’t come to NYC or I didn’t get a chance to go, but I remember wanting to participate so I was thrilled when I was able to sign up this year!  Essentially, it is a massive yoga class being held at the MoMA and everyone has to wear white.  I got some white capris (from Lole, of course) but I’m a little nervous how they are going to look on my big preggo booty!

Yoga in Bryant Park– A summer staple is back!!  I love these outdoor free yoga classes every Thursday!  In fact, the yoga photo in my Food & Fitness logo was taken at last year’s Bryant Park yoga.  This year the yoga classes are being sponsored by Athleta and YogaWorks.

Downward Dog 2 in Times Square

Solstice in Times Square– What better way to celebrate the summer solstice than a yoga class in the middle of ones of the busiest places on earth?  You bet I’ll be there again this year!

Plus so much more!  Stay tuned for updates and recaps all summer long!  It’s going to be one fit summer!

In other news, Soul Cycle made headlines recently when an NYC fitness instructor tweeted that he was banned from the studio.  This tweet brought to light the fairly common practice of boutique fitness studios banning fitness instructors from taking classes at their studio in an effort to protect their intellectual property and reduce competition.  What do you guys think of this?

Personally, I think its kind of cheap.  I think that the industry as a whole benefits from sharing knowledge, information and experiences.  When you visit a studio you are going there because you enjoy the workout method, you like the instructors and the overall atmosphere appeals to you.  Even if an instructor goes in and observes all these things, there is no perfect formula that will guarantee that instructor can recreate it.  Plus, I think banning instructors creates unnecessary animosity.  I’ve had some issues with Soul Cycle for awhile now but this is kind of icing on the cake for me.

Readers, anyone going to Healthy U tomorrow?  What do you think of the instructor ban?  What workouts are you looking forward to this summer?
