Some Health Benefits and Lots of Indulgences!

I’ve had so many figs this fall I’m practically becoming a fig.  So considering how many I’ve eaten, I thought I would do a little research into the health benefits of figs.  So here ya go!

  • Figs are a good source of potassium which can help lower blood pressure.
  • Figs are full of fiber.  Studies have shown high fiber diets assist in losing and controlling weight.  Fiber has also been shown to prevent breast cancer (so eat your fall figs during Breast Cancer Awareness Month!)
  • Figs are full of calcium-a bone density building nutrient.  Ladies, did you know that as we age, we are more susceptible to osteoporosis?  The good news is that we are still building bone density until the age of 30.  So now is the chance to consume calcium and build that bone density.  Maybe I should add this to my 30 Under 30 list!?

Now, for the good stuff, I know you really wanted to hear all the gory details from my total indulgence this weekend!  My parents came to visit so naturally we were eating out a bunch!

BUT, you’ll be happy to know that Friday night started out with at least some health benefits (see above) at Fig and Olive!

I meant to take photos of our dinner but it was so good and I was so busy eating that, well, I forgot 🙁  Here are some highlights I pulled from the web!

We started off the dinner with 3 types of crostini: Burrata, Tomato, Herbs & Balsamic; Manchego, Fig & Marcona Almond; and Prosciutto, Fig, Olive, Ricotta & Walnut.  We also had two apps!  Fig & Gorgonzola Tartlet & Truffle Mushroom Croquette.  My mom and I split the Fig and Olive Salad (check back for my own re-creation!) and Zucchini Blossom and Goat Cheese Ravioli.  OMG, I am SALIVATING as I type this!  Everything was totally decadent and delicious!  A total indulgence but totally worth it! 😉

Of course our indulgences didn’t stop there!  On Sunday we headed to Max Brenner for brunch.  HOLY CHOCOLATE HEAVEN!

The hot chocolate is completely amazing!  We tried the Italian Cream hot chocolate, the Marshmallow hot chocolate and Mexican Spicy hot chocolate.

Everyone clearly looks happy (either that or they are on a total chocolate induced sugar high!)

This was my attempt at a healthy breakfast!

Hahahaha!  Seriously a total indulgence but so much fun!

Don’t worry though, we kept active with a bike ride through Central Park!

What a weekend!

Readers, what are some of your favorite indulgences?  How do you work it off?
